We oftentimes dive in head deep into various forms of activism which consists of intentional action to bring about social, political, economic, or environmental change (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Activism). The need to take part and be active in various forms of activism is for many (at some point in their life) only normal in light of the human calamity we see on all fronts of society today.
I think about activism at various times and it intrigues me in the varying ways in which it raises its head about us.
I recently ran across the following quote on the Web and wanted to share it with you.
“I believe in justice: but I am not a preacher of the gospel of justice, but the Gospel of Christ who calls us to justice. I believe in love, but I am not a preacher of the gospel of love, but the Gospel of Christ who calls us to love. I am committed to peace, but I am not a preacher of the gospel of peace, but the Gospel of Christ who calls us to peace. I believe in the value of the simple life, but I am not the preacher of the simple life, but of the Gospel of Christ that calls us to the simple life. Let us beware of the ultimate plagiarism of borrowing some great concepts from Jesus then running off proclaiming these concepts and not sharing the Christ that empowers these concepts.”
from: Myron Augsburger, Former President of Eastern Mennonite Seminary, 1983.
I feel that Mr. Augsburger has expressed a thought of life-changing revelation which, unfortunately, is little known today. I feel also that if there was more concentration on empowering Christ and his Gospel our misfortune in society would take a radical turn in spite of the efforts of activism that we see about us today.
Peace be with you. George | |
